The problem is the wire for the pick up on the pilot truck is short and very stiff, the wire has most likely broken loose from the wiper on the axle. I removed the boiler shell , when doing this be very careful not to lose plastic spacers on the four screws, and spliced in a short length of super flex wire. This will solve your sparking and stalling.

Jason I went back to find previous post on this problem, in which I did not mention having to add some superflex wire. Hope this will help you.

Mark, You may soon find out the wire to the pilot truck was also attached with the bubble gum. I had to solder mine. The toughest part was keeping all the parts, the washers, spring and truck all together while reattaching the truck to the engine.
