Reply to "Gantry Crane Repair Question"

UPDATE

I contacted Chuck at DENVERTRAINS who was a great help, sending me all the parts I needed.  Great Guy to do business with!

The gearbox is indeed one piece with motor, internal gears and belt.  I have posted  picks here of what one looks like.  As John said, there are different size belts.  Some are narrower than others which tend to be more round.

When using this item, as OLD/NEW stock.......you will have to clean out the original grease within the gearbox which in my case, turned to "wax".

Re-greased with Red and Tacky.

Happy to report that the crane is up and running nicely.

I was able as per instructions to vary the speed of the cab rotation and hook up/down with my Legacy system.  Nice feature.  The cab rotates too fast otherwise.

However, I have 2 questions left:

1) Why did Lionel change the belt sizes?  The groove on the motor shaft is longer for the wide belts and the motor seems more "robust".

2)  What purpose do the resistors serve that are across both posts of the motor?

Thank You
