First, if you plan to create your own design and have a Windows computer, download a program named SCARM. It is free to use (but only up to 100 pieces of track) and not that hard to learn. Next, search online for model railroad trackplans to find inspiration. Finally, search online for "givens and druthers." This is a process of identifying your limitations (givens) and your expectations (druthers) to determine what you can fit and what you would like to fit into your space.

Last piece of advice: plan well before any major purchases or undertakings to maximize future enjoyment. Example: Depending on space available, it might be better to cut that lumber into two 2.5x10 and two 3x12 sections to run an around the area layout with wider curves.
