I used the 1x4 wood for shelves about 30 yrs ago. I also did some wider boards to allow 2 and 3 rows per board. They're primarily used as storage first and as display second..

I stained them walnut color and put grooves in them. The grooves are to keep the cars from possibly rolling off the shelf.
