I've thought about this possibility too, either making my own switches similar to Ross, or handlaying track. When I add up the costs, plus the value of my time it makes no sense at all for me to handlay or build switches. Everyone's mileage varies in this department of course, and some people enjoy that part of the hobby as was discussed before. But I'd add to the math the value of your time (e.g. if it takes two hours to build one switch, add the equivalent in dollar value to the total cost).
