Help Identify 12 wheel Tender

I need help identifying the following MTH 12 wheel tender and what can be done. It was in a lionel box, but when I opened it, it was MTH. Didn't spend much on it so I am not out much on it. Metal shell.

There was a place for on/off in the frame, but a switch was not installed.

Is this first gen Proto sound? What MTH engines can I use this with?

Is it good to keep the sound system or best to update it all with a new sound system. If I can retrofit pickups on the trucks.
