I used small washers or wooden shims to fill the small gap between wall and shelf. Start with all the mounting screws installed but not tightened all the way. Whatever screw can be screwed all the way without distorting the shelf is the one I started with. Start tightening the others but when you see distortion about to start stop and measure the gap. Take the screw out and fill the gap with enough washers or wooden shim so you can reinsert the screw and tighten all the way down. If of course the walls are flat you shouldn’t need the use spacers though.
