If you can pinpoint a spot getting hot and see the wires you may be able to put some nail polish on them to insulate them. If you can't then you need to find a new coil. I don't know if the MTH coil would be the same size or if someone like Train Tender would have a replacement.

I'm wondering if this isn't the case. I bought this along with some other things before I knew a whole lot about what to look for. Looking back it had been stored in a garage for many years. The tower itself has a decent amount of rust on it. I'm guessing maybe the coil windings have suffered damage as well. I hadn't thought about this until your post but it makes sense. Increased resistance = heat.
