Menard's can afford to do what they do because trains are such an infinitesimally small part of their operation ($8.7 billion,) Lionel can't afford to do the same ($51.27 million estimated.)
Plus, Menard's has so far stayed away from locomotives, high levels of rolling stock detail and and electronic controls systems.
