The real reason behind both the Southern Rwy and Norfolk & Western Rwy have their units designated with the long hood as front was, if the unit could not be turned at the end of a run, then the short hood would be leading ing the return trip. The thinking was that the crews would thus not complain about operating the unit "backwards".
