One of the original uses of Homasote, (for the Old Timers), were Bulletin Boards, in schools. I would venture a guess, that back in the 40's & 50's, some Model Train hobbyist, thought it might be a good use for layouts, as a sound deadener. That is merely a wild guess, as it's use in model trains.
