I would not use a dimmer at all. The waveform would get too chopped up. A conventional postwar Lionel pulmore motor will run, and maybe a Williams, but I really doubt any MTH PS1 or PS2 engine would. Ditto for Lionel TMCC/legacy equipped engine.

I don't know what else would work, but the dimmer won't.
