How do I get the "Lionel Cola" cans back into the car?

We have this 'Lionel Cola' car, and it seems to basic work perfectly. I pushed the button and the guy pops out and the little cans fly right out of the car. But I feel like I'm missing something really obvious, how do I get the cans back in there? There's a little latch on top, that looks like maybe they go in, but they don't really seem to fit?
