How do you tell O Scale and Semi Scale products apart?

It’s easy with locomotives, usually, to tell the difference between Legacy scale products and LionChief

But how do you change the difference between Semi scale cars and scale cars with the boxes being identical. Couldn’t Lionel mark it on the box or am I missing something
