Joe, thank you for the tip on linking to the Lionel Support site.   (I never would have though that they would have data on what turned out to be an odd-ball Lionel product from 28 years ago!)  I found exploded diagrams for both of my Lionel Large Scale 0-6-0 & 0-4-0 locos.  It may be a bit tricky to remove those bottom plates, though.  It looks like if you attempt to do so, a whole bunch of springs & brushes may pop out.  The diagrams, appear to show that they jut from the side edges of the bottom plates to contact with the inside of each drive wheel.  I will report back!
