I have a Lionel 990 remote n base remote is ok' but won't talk to the base' anybody have any idea's what could be bad with the base

Lionel no longer repairs lionel base, any idea what parts could be bad. other then the crystal! I'm an ASC TECH for MTH!

any help would be appreciated! Sincerely any help would be greatly appreciated.
