I suggest viewing Ebay under Model Trains for estimating cost . I started with an Atlas SW8/9 2 rail and 4 Atlas 2 rail box cars. My most pleasant surprise recently was the Atlas Trainman ESU CSX 8-40CW locomotive. Personally I buy only Atlas O 2 rail products.
