Seems like creating a tool or device to use in a situation such as you've described would be a worthwhile project for a fledging model railroading entrepreneur. Might take more r&d than anticipated and likely not produce that many sales to be that financially profiitable but the end product would certainly be appreciated by many railroading hobbyists such as yourself.
