Printing directly on the build plate often mitigates this issue. Many people seem to be afraid of this technique, but it often works very well and avoids many problems.
The whole "raft/supports" thing, while often important, is overused, IMO. The technique evolved in the context of kids printing highly-irregular statuettes of dragons and such. It is often mis-applied for the more geometric shapes that building modelers often print.
