"Sandpaper?" That sounds..., risky. Apparently nothing more than a pencil eraser soaked in Pine Sol (I would use Simple Green instead) works well to remove lettering without damaging the paint, leaving it ready for new decals. I experimented briefly with just a plain eraser, and that seemed to work.
