After reading through all the responses, I had to chuckle for a moment as I recalled this repair on the front truck of a 200 series ALCO.
Bushings??? We don't need no steenking bushings! Lionel's design was to let the axles (and therefore the weight of the car) ride on the edges of this piece of sheet metal - and that was the ONLY bearing surface! Thank goodness this era has passed!!!
I have used red n tacky grease, high pressure lithium "break-in" grease meant for the break-in period on a new automotive camshaft, and I have even used automotive wheel bearing grease - the latter was touted as having lots of fiber to add cohesiveness and allow it to stick to the wheel bearing surfaces in a car (that proved to be a little too thick for my little trains )
I guess the bottom line is to try 'em and see if you like 'em. At my age, I doubt I will be around to see any grease-induced corrosion or acid attacks on my train's bearings, so maybe the next guy will have to deal with them ...
