Chris, I don't know who you would say would be the best, or was there ever a best, as there were so,so many different types of Steam Locomotives. They all had their little quirks, and certain ways that they had to be handled.
I got to be around so many as a kid of the 40's and 50's, and I took them for granted.
I'm just excited to see a major railroad, show the interest to even consider letting steam locomotives run on their real estate anymore!.
I know watching Rich Melvin and the FT.Wayne Group perform, shows how high a "bar of professionalism", that can be maintained, for something that serves the general public, and "Safety" being their #1 priority!
Norfolk Southern, Ft.Wayne Steam Group, and Virginia Museum of Transportation and all of the support groups that make up the Steam Excursion Programs deserve an A+ in my book.
This last tragic crash that Amtrac just experienced, sure won't help matters. It's gonna get to the point that each engine crew, or flight crew will have to go thru a battery of Physic testing before the company's will let them put in a days work.
I'm a true believer in that "You Follow, as You are Lead", and there is great leadership abound with the "Norfolk Southern Organization". I learned that from my step father, him being an old "Southern Railroad" man.
When being out and about, if we would see a "SR" Railroad insignia, he would all but stop, and make the family get out of the car an salute! I guess the old man appreciated the opportunity!...Brandy!
