Matt, The Lionel cars are longer and the distance between the steps and the pivot point of the trucks may be different.
The diaphragms are in bad shape because the Styrofoam cradle is made for the cars without the diaphragms. There are two indentations in the cradle for the diaphragms. Placing the cars in the Styrofoam without removing the diaphragms will crush them.
