I’m not much of an expert on Northern Pacific steam, but from some photographs I’ve seen it appears the NP gave at least some of their locomotives a dark silver or grey boiler jacketing. Lots of brass HO models are painted this way and even with this black and white image you can spot the color difference of the boiler with the black cab and tender. Unfortunately Lionel got the boiler color wrong on their NP 2-8-8-2...
