That is exactly what I was thinking, but only one course high. One course is 1 1/4" according to @JohnnieWalker. The mesh would basically replace the spindles which are 1 1/8". Since I have other places to put this, I may try that first.

Of course, I could get fancy and electrify it with a spindle turned upside down, socket and pear shaped bulb.
