I had one of those Lionel cabooses, too, but didn't know I had company in having melted a roof. I just figured it was due to my being overly enthusiastic
about having the caboose spew volumes of smoke continually. (I'm still not sure why
the melting happened.) However, a friend managed to save the roof - I don't know how - and heavily weathered the entire shebang to cover-up any flaws. I like it now, as it is, but don't run the smoke unit any further (I'm not even sure it is still inside.
