Legacy Controller "Sticky"

I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this.

I have a Legacy command base and controller that I bought a few months after they were initially released-2008 maybe? In any case, I hadn't used it in a few years(I know-my trains have been a bit neglected) and was disappointed to find that the gray grips on the sides had turned very "sticky" feeling. The best I can describe is that it feels a lot like 1990s Nikon cameras, which I know probably doesn't mean a lot to everyone.

Needless to say, I'm a bit disappointed considering that my 20 year old CAB-1 is still perfect and still works perfectly.

Has anyone encountered this, and if so how have you remedied it?
