Roaring Camp and Big Trees RR, Felton Ca. I was engineer for the day!  Not my "best", but my most memorable.

Like Ray, I also was engineer for a day at the Roaring Camp and Big Trees RR (Felton is near Santa Cruz, CA).  Two years ago this summer my wife and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary and we took a bunch of friends and family to ride the train -- her gift to me was the engineer gig.  In my case, I was on the #7, a Lima-built Shay and once underway, I got to drive -- which meant that most of the time one hand was on the sander valve and one on the whistle cord.  Because the ride ascends a local mountain, there was some messin' with the Johnson bar.  I think the fireman worked harder than the engineer most of the time, controlling the boiler feedwater, oil injection into the firebox and opening the blow-down valves - pretty much constantly fussing with one of those things.

So here are my pix... The fellow with the oil can was the real engineer...
