Being a cheapster, I have had excellent luck getting the old shade look from used glue tubes.  You could use the top of a styrene cement tube or even better, as I do, a used Duco Cement tube.

I redrill the Dispenser portion and insert a grain of wheat bulb.  I have attached a couple of poor pictures that should give you the idea.  I paint mine and add some decorative striping.  They end-up looking quite nice.  Mine hang down straight, but you could also bend some brass or aluminum tubing if you wanted to make a self supporting light.   

They look really cool on the layout and feed them with less voltage than they are rated for so they will last longer and won't end up being a focal point.  The grain of wheat bulb look just like real lamp globes.  I'm not sure you would get the same effect with LED's.
