Linomaster "dyna chuff"

I have three Lionmaster engines: T1-duplex, J3a Hudson and D+H Challenger. "chuff seems to work fir the T1, it worked for a while for the J3a and doesn't work for the challenger. It's my understanding that the chuff is synchronized to the wheel rotation, but what is the mechanism? With ERR soundboards, a reed switch and a magnet attached to the tender axle is the mechanism.
