Lionel 16000 series coaches

Can somebody chime in with the history of the 16000 series passenger coaches that were produced in the 80's? They're what my dad got for our layout when I was a kid and I currently have 4. I'm adding more to ultimately have a roster of 7 for long haul express and maybe 4 in local passenger service and take the rounded back observation car out of the regional service.

I'm just curious of the history behind them as their not overly plentiful online.
