Lionel 2343 horizontal motor idler gear

The idler gear on each of my 2343 motors has quite a bit of play so that it often pulls away from the body of the motor and as a result does not fully line up with the armature shaft gear (see photos). The loco runs well nonetheless. Why does this happen? Is it a problem? If so, how can it be fixed?
