T'ing the rollers to the switch is correct.
Arcing an heat in a truck indicates the insulation is worn off the wire there.
A piece of heat shrink will fix it but may make the wire too stiff.
New stranded insulated wire is the good fix.
I bought a similar car a few years back, the old wire insulation was so hard and brittle I replaced it all before running the car.
I also pulled the top off and cleaned and lubed the spindle shafts. Works much better now. Still loud tho!
