What is involved in "re-seating" the boards?  If i were to take the current board loose, would it be worth the expense of upgrading the sound board to something more current with better sound quality or is that a lot of work?

Your locomotive was made prior to the modular boards, so there's nothing to re-seat.

Before we do anything else, do a "restore" on your locomotive using the procedure on Page 12 of your manual. Make sure you are using the "4" code.

If that doesn't fix things, it sounds like the RailSounds in the tender is not seeing the serial line in TMCC mode. To verify this, run your loco in TMCC mode. Does the sound system still respond to whistle and bell commands from your transformer while in TMCC mode?

Also, does the back-up light and rear coupler work in TMCC mode?

Lastly, does the tether between the locomotive and tender have all six pins intact?
