I was able to successfully run both the starter set loco (656) and the separate sale locomotive (664) in a lash up back at a club show in 2017. I programmed them to the same ID number and do not remember having any motor issues.

My problem with doing that is the #656 has the small and fragile set motors, and putting too much of a load on those will cook them. Given that fact, if the #656 is trying to go faster than the #664, that could be a problem. It's not that they won't run, it's how long they'll run.
