Lionel 7640 RS-11 diesel report and questions

This is my first modern era Lionel engine; I had a few MTH RailKings. I only run them in conventional mode, which may be the origin of the disappointments, however my MTH engines do not have any of these isssues.

The smoke unit and cab light only operate in neutral.

At max setting the engine sound is nice but not quite loud enough.

Also, the paint scheme was a disappointment: It was pictured as a CR painted over a LV, with the original Lehigh Valley lettering still plainly visible. Fun concept but lousy execution: the LV lettering is undetectable under normal lighting.

The headlight is fantastic, far superior to MTH, and it runs great.

Can anyone tell me whether the short nose or the long nose is the "front" in the prototype?

Very sad to say, I would be very hard pressed to shell out $400 for another Lionel.

Advice or comments??

Thanks!

Steve
