Why on earth would want to sit at the back if you had your druthers, which the railroads apparently did?

Many railroads did it as it was often an agreement with the Engineers union to do so for safety purposes in the event of grade crossing accidents. The inclusion of "high hoods" on the short hood end of the engines that normally don't have them, is a similar situation as far as crew protection, especially on the N&W and Southern railroads.

It was also a carry over from the steam days when locomotives had a boiler out front for protection. The engine crews were simply used to it.

The practice is seen less and less with the advent of modern safety cabs.
