Lionel Blue Comet 6-8801 or Southern Crescent 6-8702 - Smoke Units

Hi everyone,

So I have these two engines and their smoke is lackluster at best. I have replaced the resistors and removed the wicking sock and that seemed to help but I cant get them to "puff" any better. The spring seems REALLY weak in the piston assembly. Anyone run into this? Any tips for fixing and/or adjusting it? I tried to search the forums but couldn't find anything about this particular part number. I've attached some pictures so you can see what I am talking about. Both locomotives are part of the 8600 - 8702 - 8801 Hudson line.

I did read about drilling a bigger hole in the smoke unit but I'm nervous doing that as I'm not really wanting to buy a new smoke unit.

Thanks in advance to all those way smarter than I am. I'm still learning.
