Lionel crossing gate

I have a question reguaring the operation of the lionel fastrack crossing gates with the operational gates and lights. I was wondering if the lights on the gates are suppose to come on when the gates come down? The crossing lights work well and alternate like they are suppose to however the ones on the gate do not come on at all. I would also like to know how to adjust the timing of the lights and gates in relation to the train. Do I have to spread the isolator tracks farther apart to make the gates and lights stay on longer? Thanks
