Ironhorse; another tip. I found steel shower curtain rods (tubes if you will)that are an exact match for both the ID and the OD of the Lionel culverts, are already plated to match the finish, and only need to be cut, smoothed on the end cuts, and you have ready made culverts.
Don't make the mistake of trying to use tube cutters, They roll the ends over to the inside of the culvert. OK for static loads on gondolas, but the operating culverts need to be cut, and machined smooth on the ends to work on the culvert loader and unloader.
