You said it had 1.5. That's an easy upgrade. If you want to go all the way back to 1.0 yes that's a return but again you said 1.5. easy upgrade.
As far as the warranty goes, as long as the system is not abused Lionel's policy is to repair it free of charge with a receipt. While it is unwritten, it is also well documented here.
