Lionel polar express trolley pickup rollers sparking

on streets curves D16 the pickup rollers spark and the trolley sputters - however only in one direction,

it does not spark when going in the opposite direction nor does it sputter around the curve

I’m perplexed

I have tried using both ac and DC power
