Another tip for working on open-frame prewar Lionel motors is to get a big can of CRC Lectramotive spray, and apply liberal amounts directly onto the mechanism, armature etc. Gets all that nasty decades old brush dust, grease and other gunk out before I go servicing one of those motors.

Just a word of caution with the CRC. I Used the contact cleaner doing a prewar motor from a 158 and had the bright idea of applying the stuff with the motor running. The sparks started the stuff on fire when I was spaying. It is funny after the fact and fortunately nothing was destroyed except for my pride

Poppi, are you doing a complete rebuilt (repaint)? Could you post pictures?
