Lionel PW 345 Culvert Unloader - Plastic Culvert Question

I recently found a 6342 car to use with my 345 Culvert Unloader and 342 Culvert Loader PW accessories. The car came with plastic culverts. Were these originally made by Lionel? How were they supposed to work with the 345 Unloader since it uses a magnet to pick up the culverts?

Just curious. Am I missing something?
