Lionel Subway R27 reverse Problem

good morning everyone
i have a Lionel R27 subway set and I'm having a problem with it, when the engine goes in reverse it does not run smooth it jumps but it works perfectly fine in forward, does anyone have an idea of what the problem is ? thank you
