Sounds like the power supply for the fan on the smoke unit is the issue. Check the 5V supply, it's pretty simple, a diode, cap, and the 3-terminal regulator. My guess is it's either the cap or the regulator that is crapping out. Many times the cap comes loose from the board, that would cause a brief burst of power from the regulator and then no voltage.
