Lionel Virginian Conversion to Command Control

Can someone help me out with this? I am in the process of converting a Lionel Virginian diesel engine from conventional to command control. I will be using an Electric RR Company AC Commander board and their rail sounds board.  I have two options regarding the smoke unit to use. I purchased a MTH fan driven smoke unit  from RTR trains which should be wired using track power. The problem is that I will not be able to control the smoke using the handheld and it is either on or off. The AC board has a port for a smoke unit input but I am afraid to use the MTH board as I don't want to blow out the board. There is a Lionel fan driven smoke unit (6SP-8590-028) that uses 27 OHM's and might be a better choice so I can run using the ERR board. Or is there another unit that might work with the board.  Is there anybody out there that can give me a hand with this.
