If you really want the couplers to work easily, it's likely that you'll have to take them apart and smooth all the interior latching surfaces. I've done this to a few, and they close really smoothly with almost zero pressure. The molding "flash" on them and the rough surfaces on the latching surfaces is hard to fix with just lubricant.
