Charlie , I'm not familiar with the Marx engine but on my conventional post war Lionel I would switch the leads to the brushes on the motor. On the MTH or newer Lionel can motors I would just unsolder the motor leads and switch them and resolder.
I have a Lionel conventional Gp38 with horn that began to only ran in reverse until I switched the wires . It runs in forward only now. It was a Lionel from a time period that had a history of bad electronic reversing boards . I guess the boards are available but they are expensive so I'll have to be happy with forward for now.
