I think an underlying point of anger here, is that almost everyone on this board would have been happy to pay an extra $3.00 to buy those cars with metal trucks instead of plastic, but instead, the marketers at Menard's decided that it "must be priced at less than $20.00" so they just manufactured junkier cars instead.
It is a race to the bottom as far as quality is concerned.
Again, my two cents. It depends what you want to do with the cars. I spot mine in the yards and sidings and out of way layout locations, while the good stuff is run on mainlines. And quite honestly for me (my opinion) I don't care or look that closely at the trucks. I am having more fun spotting cars, switching, and running than to worry "oh gee, that late period car really should have a roller bearing with revolving caps truck under it".
And I assume that if people are bothered by those plastic trucks, Lionel or other readily available trucks can be substituted onto the really nice Menarards car bodies you like.
Each to their own................
